Describe an exciting trip/ long –distance trip you made.

You should say:

when you made the trip

where you went

how the trip was and explain why it was exciting.

Sample Response:

Last summer, I had a very nice holiday with my parents in Sanya, Hainan Province. It is a very famous coastal city in the southern part of China. The place is very beautiful, and each year thousands of tourists spend their holidays there.

We spent four whole days in Sanya. We spent our time visiting tourist sites along the coastal area. The blue sky, navy sea, white beaches, my eyes are filled with beautiful landscapes. My parents and I also took the golden chance to swim and enjoyed the sunbathing on the comfortable beach. One more thing worth mentioning is that I also tried scuba diving there. It was so fascinating. I swam very close to the coral beds and beautiful fishes swam beside me elegantly. Never shall I forget such a unique experience. Well, of course, that did cost me a lot. Apart from seeing the sceneries, we also had lots of delicious sea food like lobster, crab, oyster and so on. Even today, I can still clearly remember the feast I enjoyed in Sanya.   For four years, because my parents and I had always been busy about our own business, our family hadn’t had a chance to spend such a nice holiday together. That’s why this trip to Sanya has been a very exciting one for me. I’ll always treasure this long-distance trip as my best memory.

Further questions

1. What is the vehicle that Chinese people often use when they travel?

I think people usually choose the vehicle in accordance with the distance of their destinations. Coach, train, airplane, ships can all be possible choices for travelers. But mostly speaking, I think in China, people prefer to use the railway system when they travel. Particularly during the Spring Festival, there are always crowds at train stations. I guess this is because trains can offer a way to travel fast at a relatively low cost.

2. What do you think is the difference between individual and group travel?

I think if people choose to travel alone, they can have a more flexible travel plan than group travelers. There is no need holding to a strict time schedule and people can stay at a particular sight as long as they want. But for group traveling, I think it’s advantageous in terms of cost. For group travelers, tickets, rooms and board are booked by the travel agent. In this way, people can save money for their trip and they’ll have less concern about things besides travel.

3. What do you think are the pros and cons of traveling?

I like traveling and I’ve been to many places both in China and in European countries. I think travel is a very good way to get relaxed from the heavy pressure of working and studying. Moreover, it gives me chances to broaden my scope and to meet interesting people in different places. However, travel is usually time and strength   consuming and sometimes it can be very expensive, so I think, definitely, it’s not a good choice for everyone.

4. There are a lot of foreign visitors coming to China nowadays. What’s your comment on that?

Well, it’s great that more and more foreign visitors are coming to China. I find two advantages of this phenomenon. One is that visiting China is a very good way for foreign friends to learn about the new China and our traditional values, because it is widely recognized that the best way to learn about a country and its culture is to actually visit the place. Further, when these tourists return to their home countries, they will be able to describe what they’ve seen in China to their friends, and I believe it is a good chance to publicize China on the world stage.

5. Why do many people travel abroad? What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages?

I traveled abroad once to the USA and that was several years ago.  I cherish this fantastic  experience not only because I’ve got chances to see some of the world-famous tourist sites, but more importantly, the cross culture experience is interesting that it has actually helped me gain a better understanding about our own culture in reflection to foreign culture. I guess this is the major advantage of foreign travel as well as the reason why people are usually fancied by their traveling abroad. Of course, there is one very obvious disadvantage of traveling abroad. Most often, the expenses are too high for a majority of people to shoulder.

6. What’s your comment on the prospect of China’s tourism industry?

I expect there will be a prosperous future for China’s tourism industry. So far, the tourism is not a major GDP contributor. However, during the last decade, resulting from an improved living standard and a switch of consuming pattern, more and more people begin to choose travel as a way of recreation, and the tourism industry in China has witnessed a significant growth. Now the industry still grows steadily under the current prosperous economic climate. I think if you take a look at the tourism market during the long vacation period you’ll agree with me without any hesitation.

7. What kind of foreign people do you think choose to travel in China? Why they do so?

I suppose the foreign friends who choose to travel In China are those who fancy the Chinese  culture. The culture I mean here is a broad term. There may be people who are interested in nature sceneries like the Three Gorges and Mt. Huang, while at the same time, there may also be people who are attracted by Chinese civilization, which is amongst the four origins of civilization.  Different people have different expectations on their trips to China. Whatever the expectations are, I believe for those travelers, China is the place where their eastern dreams are.

8. Can you predict what kind of vehicle we’ll have in the future?

Well, this question reminds me about the film I’ve recently seen- Star Wars Episode III. Besides the exciting plot of the film, one thing that strikes me most is the gorgeous predictions on the  lifestyle in the future. It’s great that in the film I’ve actually visualized the kind of vehicle I used to imagine that people will have in the future. As road congestions are becoming more and more severe than before, I do believe it’s just a matter of time for us to have private air shuttles that can fly freely in the sky as convenient transport vehicles at our disposal.

9. How would your grandparents travel to other cities? By car or by some other means?

My grandparents live in a small town about 200 km away from my home. I should say, since they’re growing older, they hardly ever go to other cities. My grandparents usually visit us during the summer and late winter. There’s a highway link between the two cities, and it only takes about 4 hours to travel round trip, so it’s fairly convenient. It’s economical too, because the one-way fare only costs 50 Yuan. For these reasons, my grandparents often choose express shuttles as their traveling vehicle.
